Criticized U.S. treatment of detainees
The Bush administration has been criticized for the treatment of prisoners in the war against terrorism, said an American political leader has enabled any commitment that he wants “and lawmakers are demanding the end of secret CIA prisons.
Lt. Col. Stephen Abraham, the army reservist and a lawyer, served on a court for prisoners at Guantanamo, “said House Armed Services Committee Thursday the existing system of interrogation of prisoners calls simply” rubber stamps arrests.
He denounced the courts at Guantanamo as “nothing more than an attempt by the (USA) Executive to … everyone wants to maintain in the war against terrorism “.
Abraham, has long experience as leader of the military intelligence, has worked for several months in the years 2004 and 2005, the Pentagon unit that examines cases of Guantanamo captives.
Referring to a police line of the film “Casablanca” - “round up the usual suspects” - the legislature Abraham said: “Today, they would be at Guantanamo.”
Last month, Abraham, a court an affidavit filed its criticism on the process. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear appeals from detainees at Guantanamo previously toured with them.
Thursday, the testimony of Abraham in favor of Democrats Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri proposal to restore the right of prisoners to habeas corpus. These time-honoured principle of Anglo-American law prevents the government from locking people without judicial review.
Congress last year waiver of this right for foreign terrorism presumed that the government as “enemy combatants”, such as some 360 suspected al-Qaida and Taliban prisoners at the naval base at Guantanamo Bay Cuba.
Skelton, the chairman of the House Armed Service Committee, and other Democrats now want to resume the habeas corpus law. A similar proposal already has a Senate committee. There are also other proposals in Congress to close Guantanamo and the house can take part in votes on one of next week.
The Bush administration has said, the abolition of habeas corpus was necessary to prevent inmates to attack if the Americans free - and that the alternative to military justice at Guantanamo, is sufficient to protect the rights of prisoners.
From justice and defence lawyers Ministry echoed those arguments Thursday at the hearing before the Committee Skelton’s to say that the legislature, the rules were put in Guantanamo, because the stakes were different
