Banks grapple with daturity breach
Columbus Bank and Trust, said Monday it is reissuing a secVisa check cards to a group of customers following recent reports of a data security breach involving the parent company of retailers TJ Maxx and Marshall.
“You do not want to take chances with your customer’s card,” said Steve Melton, CB & T, president and chief executive officer. He explained the situation is more than a major headache for the bank and its employees.
“It involves our customer, it inconveniences our customer,” he said. “We want to protect them, but at the same time they want their card. They want to be able to use their cards and this can interfere with that.” Melton said he did not know the specific number of cards that his bank is reissuing. Synovus does business in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. CB & T, the largest bank in the city, is not alone in grappling with the security breach. David Oliver, spokesman for Charlotte, NC,-based Wachovia, the No. 2 bank in Columbus, said his company has scored TJX accounts because of the incident and is closely monitoring them for possible fraud.
