A former conservative activist now pressure on civil unions
In a dramatic turnaround, a woman, once led the charge against gay marriage in Hawaii is now lobbying state lawmakers, civil unions.
Debi Hartmann works with gay activists and Democratic heads of states to adopt civil unions, have the same rights as traditional marriage. The move is a reversal of Hartmann, once completed, Hawaii’s future today, a group of conservative Mormons, Catholics and others, against homosexual unions. In this role, the married mother of three railed against homosexual marriage.

But in an exclusive interview with Washington Blade, Hartmann said it is now of the opinion that States should adopt the unions to protect civilians from gay couples and their children.

“Real people live real life,” she said. “We must recognize that our neighbors are our friends, and they are left from a set of social processes, we have taken for granted.”
Militants and elsewhere in Honolulu welcomed Hartmann’s gay neuentdeckt commitment to the rights of citizens.

“I think every day more Americans are to realize that the main mechanisms of legal protection for same-sex families is good for our country and, indeed, strengthens the American family,” he said.
